Read poem Nr. 96 on page 144 of Songs of Ourselves, “The Voice” by Thomas Hardy.
Follow the guide below for analysis.
- Read the poem twice. Notice it is in the second person (“you”) addressing the dead woman.
- Make a glossary with the words you don´t know (not too many as it is in very easy language!).
- Re-read the poem with the glossary in hand.
- What do you think the dead woman is trying to tell the narrator?
- Can you find any reference to the dead woman`s appearance? What did she look like? Can you find any reference to her voice? What did her voice sound like?
- How does the narrator feel about having lost his wife? What words suggest that?
- In the third stanza there is a change of tone. How has the narrator´s mood changed and why? How is this communicated to us readers? What does the image of the breeze mean to you?
- How do you understand the very last line of the poem? What is its effect?
